The July Sovereign

His kingdom was too small for a map.

There were no borders to draw, no distant provinces to name. A cathedral rose at its center, surrounded by fields and gardens that seemed to extend only as far as the eye could see.

The sovereign carries this vanished country upon himself: its flowers, its pearls, its harvests, its ceremonial colors. A small lamb rests among the garden above his brow, while a branch crosses his lips — the same silent gesture carried through the herbarium.

Some say the kingdom disappeared when its last citizen forgot its name.

Others believe it simply became a garden.

Every kingdom ends as a garden.
