The May Sovereign

His kingdom was never drawn on a map.

Its cathedral rose from the garden, its borders were marked by flowering fields, and its last living witness took the form of a small green bird.

The sovereign carries the remains of his country upon him: its flowers, its landscape, its architecture, its seasons. A branch crosses his lips — perhaps a vow, perhaps the last sentence of a language that no longer exists.

What was once a kingdom has begun to return to the earth.
